Rare Diseases and Rare Cancers in the Era of Systems Biology Symposium

The Mellowes Center 2nd annual symposium, "Rare Diseases and Rare Cancers in the Era of Systems Biology," will be held in 2024 as a single-day hybrid event featuring seminars and panel discussions from expert researchers and clinicians in three new focus areas: Phenotyping Chromatinopathies and Mechanisms of Disease, Advances in Functional Genomics, and Pharmacogenomics Frontiers and Epigenetic Therapeutics. Bringing speakers with innovative and novel research projects to our event will continue to expand the understanding of what is feasible and applicable to disease focused research.
Invited speakers, from regional to international, focused on the current and desired future state of rare disease research and advocated for greater understanding and therapeutic interventions for rare diseases and rare cancers.

Keynote Speaker | Dr. Peter W. Lewis
University of Wisconsin - Madison
Professor, Department of Biomolecular Chemistry
Dr. Lewis specializes in the mechanisms of chromatin assembly, gene silencing, and epigenetic inheritance. His research focuses on understanding the biochemical mechanisms involved in establishing and maintaining silent chromatin, also known as heterochromatin. To maintain cellular identity it is essential to keep genes specific to certain lineages silent and failure to do so can lead to developmental defects or promote tumor growth. His work advances precision patient care and by revealing mechanisms of disease initiation and progression, novel targets for treating disease will be identified.
